Louise Sumner Gutshall

Louise Sumner Gutshall of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Clifton Forge, Virginia passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023, at Snyder’s Nursing Home in Salem, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, Noah F. Sumner and Bessie T. Sumner, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William C. Sumner and Raymond E. Sumner; a dear sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lawler Sumner; and her husband, Charles L. Gutshall.

Louise graduated from Central High School in Low Moor, Virginia. She had a BS from Jefferson School of Business and furthered her studies in law, accounting and English at the University of Virginia (UVA).

She was a banker for 46 years, eventually retiring from Wachovia (after working with Central Fidelity Bank for 30 years). She was a bank officer and top salesperson. She loved her customers. She was an avid reader, a painter, and a published poet. She enjoyed sports, including basketball, golf, and tennis.

Louise was perhaps best known for her kind, gentle spirit, and her desire to help others. She was always smiling, seemed very happy and had an “off-the-wall” sense of humor. Louise truly never met a stranger.

What carried her through her entire life was her strong faith and deep love for Jesus Christ, her Lord.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 14, 2023, at Oakey’s Funeral Service – South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue. The Reverend Earl B. Green will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Louise’s honor to your favorite charity, especially one caring for sexually abused children or addressing breast cancer in the Roanoke Valley. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.Oakeys.com.

Arrangements by Oakey’s Funeral Service – South Chapel, Roanoke, VA (540) 989-3131.
