COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - The Covington Lumberjacks and Olde Town Covington have joined forces with the Christmas Mother and Salvation Army for a teddy bear drive. Teddy Bear Donations to Be Collected at Saturday’s Game

COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — The Covington VA250 Celebration opened Thursday evening at the Jackson River Sports Complex. Crowds began lining up before gates opened at 6 p.m. and quickly filled the midway. Rides provided by Coles Amusements drew steady lines throughout the evening, while food vendors served a variety of fair favorites.
The celebration continues Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 6 p.m. each day and admission is free. Ride tickets are available for purchase on site. The event concludes Saturday night with a fireworks show. Photo: Christopher Mentz, VR

AHS Cougars Volleyball takes flight

LOW MOOR – The new look Alleghany Cougars volleyball team opens up their 2023 season in one week on Tuesday, August 22nd at Wilson Memorial.

 As Alleghany and Covington merge together, first year varsity head coach Charles Leitch will have a plethora of talent returning from last year’s rosters from the Mountaineers and Cougars.

 In her sophomore season at Covington last year, Kaiya Lian led her team with 281 digs in 83 sets, while posting 181 kills which was second to the Pioneer District player of the year Aubrey Brown who finished with 214. The Cougars last year finished with a 22-5 record. Junior Jayahna Hughes was third on the Cougars last year during her sophomore season with 162 digs in 82 sets.

 During her freshman campaign, Hannah Hensley, who is now entering her sophomore year, led Alleghany last season with 76 kills in 73 sets. Meanwhile, Kinsey Middleton, who will be heading into her final season as a senior and also a returner from last year Mountaineer team was the leader in assists with 128 in 76 sets. Also returning from the team last year, junior Savannah Cash finished second on the team with 110 digs in 76 sets.

 The team will also get a new addition in junior Laken Tingler who played at Bath County last year as she helped guide the Chargers to a 14-9 season her sophomore year. Tingler led the Chargers in kills with 186, as well as in assists with 288 in 76 sets. Meanwhile she finished third on the team with 154 digs. 

 The junior varsity Cougars will be coached by Kelsey Young.

Both the varsity and JV swept their first scrimmage last week.
