RADFORD, VA- The Alleghany Mountaineers claimed the Region 2C title after defeating Patrick County 6-5 on Wednesday, May 31 at Radford University.

The Mounties jumped ahead 6-1 after five innings and held off a furious rally from the Cougars when they put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Alleghany celebrated after Anthony Webb, who recorded a save, got Hunter Pendleton to ground into a fielder’s choice which Eli Weese flipped to Connor McPeek, and the Mountaineers sealed the win.

McPeek’s 2-run double in the top of the second extended Alleghany’s lead to 3-1, then in the third, Dalton Griffith’s RBI single made it 4-1 and the Mountaineers had all the momentum and a huge crowd behind them going wild.

Webb then made it 6-1 in the top of the sixth with a 2-run base hit that scored McPeek and Garrett Via. However, Patrick County (22-5) came to life in the bottom half. A leadoff walk, followed by a double, allowed Noah Jessup to line a 2-run double to right field, and the Cougars cut the deficit to 6-3 at that point. Two more runs would score, but as stated above, that would be as close as Patrick County would get.

Webb had a great game for the Mountaineers (19-2). He finished 2-4 with three RBIs and had the save on the mound.  McPeek also went 2-4, scored a run and drove in two. D. Griffith had a pair of hits and knocked in a run, and Weese was 1-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Halen Lowman recorded the win on the hill. The big lefty tossed five innings, scattered just three hits and three earned runs. He walked four batters. In relief, Webb completed two innings, allowed five hits, and gave up two runs (1 earned).

Alleghany will host a state tournament game this Tuesday, June 6 against the Marion Scarlet Hurricanes. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
