COVINGTON, VA – On an evening that celebrated the past and current Covington Cougars (3-14/1-8) the Highland Rams played spoiler defeating the Cougars 9-5.

One day after the team had ended their nine-game losing streak, the Cougars momentum was halted early on by the Rams who scored four runs in each of the first two innings to build an 8-1 lead.

Colten Williams who led the Rams with three RBI’s put the team ahead with an RBI single in the first inning and then ripped a two-run single in the second inning which had given the team a 7-1 lead. Williams had two hits in four plate appearances. Meanwhile, Evan Kimble led the team with a three-hit day at the plate, and also drove in a run.

Michael Campbell had one hit for the Rams in three at-bats but was also the game victor as he gave up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits in his complete-game win. Campbell also walked two and struck out three.

Ethan Martin led the Cougars with a three-hit day at the plate and drove in a run. Hayden Rodgers and Trey Cook each had two hits, while Cook led the team with two RBI’s. Garrett Carper and David Crowder also provided the team with an RBI each.

Landon Arritt was hit with the loss for the Cougars as he lasted one inning on the mound where he gave up eight runs (six earned) on three hits, while walking four, and striking out one. Carper, who relieved Arritt in the second inning, was solid on the mound for the Cougars where he tossed six relief innings where he gave up just one unearned run on five hits. Carper struck out three in his six innings on the mound, and walked five.

The Cougars are on the road Tuesday as they play the Narrows Green Waves. The Green Waves shut out the Cougars at Casey Field on April 13th, 10-0.
