LOW MOOR, VA – The Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (8-4/2-3) were rolling.
The team had a 4-1 lead late into the game.
Then the fifth inning happened.
Five runs later, the Lady Mounties found themselves down by four.
A five-run fifth inning from the James River Lady Knights catapulted them to 16 runs over the final three innings as they prevailed 17-5 over the Lady Mountaineers on Tuesday night.
Lexi McCullough (3-for-5), Elly Lackey (3-for-4), Austyn Moran (W/1-for-4), were the center stage of the offense for the Lady Knights as they each had three RBI’s a piece.
The trio of McCullough, Lackey, and Moran were at the forefront of the comeback as each scored in the five-run fifth inning, but it was Moran who highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing three-run triple to give the Lady Knights a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Knights would add three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-4 lead and then would put the game away in the seventh inning following an eight-run inning. Jenna Pugh (4-for-5) who led the Lady Knights with a four-hit day at the plate, highlighted the eight-run seventh inning with a two-run double that had put the team ahead 13-4.
Moran, who had a three-RBI day, was also the winning pitcher. Moran gave up five runs (two earned) on 10 hits and struck out six in a complete-game performance on the mound. After giving up four runs through the first three innings, Moran settled down and pitched three straight scoreless innings, while only giving up three hits along the way in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings,
The Lady Mountaineers who had jumped out to a 4-1 lead were backed by a three-run second inning highlighted by a two-run single from Kaidence Nicely (2-for-3) and a solo home run from Kaylee Nicely (2-for-4) in the third inning, The team finished with two home runs as Savannah Cash (3-for-4) added a solo home run in the seventh inning.
The Lady Mountaineers finished with four players having two or more hits, while Cash led the team with a three-hit day at the plate. Kendell Keene (L/1-for-4) took the loss after giving up nine runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings.
The loss for the Lady Mountaineers was their third in the last four games, while the 17 runs they gave up was a season-high and was just the third time they have given up 10 or more runs this year.
On Thursday the team plays the Covington Lady Cougars for the final time ever at 5:00 p.m. at the Jackson River Sports Complex.
