The final “opening game” between the Alleghany Mountaineers and the Covington Cougars took place last night when both teams opened their 2023 baseball seasons against each other before next year’s consolidation.

Alleghany defeated the Cougars 22-0 in five innings.

The Mountaineers had 11 hits and drew an astonishing 22 walks on the evening.

Alleghany jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead, but a 12-run third inning sealed the deal. They drew 10 walks in that frame alone, and Chris Harden had a 3-run triple to propel the Mountaineers to the victory.

Alleghany’s’ Elijah Weese went 2-3 at the plate, scored three runs and drove in two more. Anthony Webb was 4-5 with three runs scored and three RBI’s. Hunter DePriest had a triple and drove in four runs and Harden was 2-3 with five RBI’s.

Halen Lowman picked up the win on the mound for Alleghany. He went four innings, allowed just one hit and struck out 10.

Hayden Rodgers and Ethan Martin each had a hit for the Cougars. Crowder got the loss on the hill.

Alleghany hosts Greenbrier East (WV) on Wednesday, March 15. Covington will travel to Riverheads this Thursday, March 16.
