Mystery Death Of Officer
Mystery surrounds the death of Lieutenant William J. French(left in photo below), former officer of San Francisco Presidio, whose body was found lying near his automobile near Gilroy, Calif. Army authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether the officer was murdered or ended his own life. Mrs. Gertrude McEnroe(right in photo below), Kansas City widow, was temporarily held by Gilroy authorities following her request for aid, when she disclosed that she had been French’s companion on the auto trip to Los Angeles, and that he had struck her with a hammer.

Nine Are Elected To Board Of Chamber Of Commerce
The Judges of Election for the Covington-Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce met at the Chamber’s office on Court Avenue Monday afternoon to open and count ballots cast by chamber members for election of new members to its board of directors. They certified that the following were elected to two year terms on the board: Richard F. Beirne III, Delbert G. Hepler, Howard Jamison, Louis Karman, Frank Kinzer, Robert L. Persinger, Woodrow S. Rookin and Russell Smith.

Bath County Hospital To Suspend Obstetrical Service
Bath County Community Hospital Administrator Ripley P. Owen, during a press conference Tuesday, announced the suspension of routine obstetrical services at Bath County Community Hospital. In announcing the decision, Owen called attention to the $8.2 million judgement handed down by a Southwest Virginia jury in an obstetrical malpractice case which he said has in a few short months caused dozens of Virginia physicians to halt the acceptance of obstetrical patients.

Stabbing Victim Dies At Roanoke Hospital
The victim of a Saturday morning stabbing in Covington has died, according to police. Steven Anthony Seams, 32, of 325 E. Walnut St., died Saturday afternoon at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. James P. Bryant, 42, of East Walnut Street in Covington is being held at the Alleghany Regional Jail in connection with the incident.
