Elva Mae Parrotte Ryder Carpenter, 83, of Hot Springs, Virginia passed away Saturday, October 01, 2022, at the Springs Nursing Center in Hot Springs.

She was born October 26, 1938, in Saranac Lake, New York, the daughter of the late Lloyd Leo Parrotte and Florence Mary Rule Parrotte.

Mrs. Carpenter was a caretaker for many patients in Bath County and the surrounding area. Prior to that, she was the “first” Activities Director at the Springs Nursing Center, a position she held for 3 1/2 years.

She was a former member of the Hot Springs Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of the Healing Springs Baptist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a past member of the Hot Springs Rescue Ladies Auxiliary.

Elva was married to the late Eugene Harding Carpenter whom she married on February 13, 1998. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2003.

She is survived by three children, Anita Gail Troyer & husband Michael of Healing Springs, Virginia, Lane Ryder, Jr. of Covington, Virginia, and Lorne “Chip” Ryder of Glasglow, Kentucky; eight step-children, Krystle Foster, Jewel Simms, Mary Ann McCutchen, Betty L. Simms, Eugene E. Carpenter, Robert M. Carpenter, Amelia Beaver, Laura Barrett; twenty-nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Irwin Edward Parrotte of Carmichael, California; and numerous step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Lynn Sprouse who passed away on September 29, 2006; a brother, Stanley Robert Parrotte; and a sister, Virginia Heck.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 6, 2022, at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Goforth officiating. Interment will be in Warm Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hugh Hite, James Carpenter, Lane Ryder, Chip Ryder, Eli Sprouse, and Chaz Ryder.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 5th at McLaughlin & Young Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Healing Springs Baptist Church, Building Fund, 4697 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445 or The Springs Nursing Center Resident Fund, P.O. Drawer 1, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445.
