For the second straight season, the Alleghany Mountaineers (1-0) opened their season with the Roanoke Catholic Celtics (0-1).

Following last years 43-6 victory for the Mountaineers, the team picked up back where they left off as they cruised to a 40-12 victory for the second straight victory over the Celtics.

Speaking of picking back up where they left off, Garrett Via who rushed for 91 yards and had two touchdowns in last years win, once again had another great performance against the Celtics, this time putting together a three-score performance.

Via finished the game with 65 yards on the ground with two rushing touchdowns and also recorded a 34 yard touchdown reception in the Mountaineers win.

Eli Entsminger threw for 121 yards in the air and had two touchdown performance. Xzavier Hayslett caught Entsminger’s other touchdown pass.

The Mountaineers finished with three touchdowns on the ground. Along with Via’s two rushing touchdowns, Dalton Griffith also had a touchdown in the ground attack as well.

The Mountaineers also had their first defensive touchdown of the season coming in the fourth quarter via a fumble recovery by McKinley Goodbar who returned it 57 yards into the end zone.

The Mountaineers will be back on the road for a second straight week this Friday when they travel to Carl F. Williams Football Field to take on the 1-0 Bath County Chargers who are coming off of a thrilling come from behind victory over the Covington Cougars. In last years meeting between the two schools, the Mountaineers shutout the Chargers 31-0. Via led the game with 94 rushing yard for the Mountaineers, while Hunter Waldeck led the Chargers with 28 yards on the ground.
