Just days after suffering their worst defeat of the 2022 Valley League (VBL) season, the Covington Lumberjacks (12-15) have fall into a slump after losing their third straight game in a row following a 10-2 loss on the road on Friday evening to the Waynesboro Generals.
The Lumberjacks who were one of the hottest teams in the VBL had won seven of their last nine games prior to this three game losing streak.
In the losing streak, the Lumberjacks have been outscored 34-15 and is the first time this season that the team has allowed 10 or more runs in three straight games.
The Generals who entered Friday’s game with an unbeaten record against the Lumberjacks, improved to 5-0 on the season against them following their eight run victory.
The Generals jumped on the Lumberjacks early. After a scoreless first inning of baseball, the Generals came out swinging in the second inning by putting up six runs on the scoreboard. Tanner Garrison (3-for-4) got the inning started by belting his third home run of the season which put the Generals ahead 1-0. Ahead 2-0, Matt Cedarburg (1-for-4) and TJ Clarkson (2-for-4) each added two-run singles that increased the teams lead to six runs on the Lumberjacks.
In the win, Clarkson led all with four RBI’s, while Garrison had a game-high three hits to go along with three RBI’s.
Trailing by six runs, the Lumberjacks answered in the third inning by scoring the teams only two runs which cut the lead down to 6-2. In just his second appearance on the season, Carlos Pineyro (2-for-3) hit a two-out two-run single to cut the lead down to four runs. Pineyro made his season debut in the Lumberjacks loss the night before against the Turks where he went 1-for-3. Pineyro is a senior at Louisiana St.
After cutting the lead down the four runs, the Lumberjacks struggled to get runners back on the bases in the following three innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Generals put up four more runs on the scoreboard to take a 10-2 lead. For second time in the game, Clarkson hit a two-run single which increased the Generals lead to 8-2. A few batters later, Garrison followed with a two-run double to put the team ahead eight runs.
The game was called after seven innings due to the weather.
The Lumberjacks were held to just three hits in the loss as the team batted 3-for-26. Cole Ketzner (1-for-3) provided one hit for the team, while Pineyro led the team with two hits.
Making his fifth start of the season, Richard Long (L, 1-1) suffered not only the loss, but it was also his shortest outing of the season as Long gave up six runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out two in only two innings.
