The Covington Lumberjacks (12-13) home game with the Staunton Braves was postponed on Wednesday due to the weather, that game will be made up on Monday. July 18th.
Prior to there scheduled game on Wednesday, the Lumberjacks were on the road on Tuesday against the Charlottesville TomSox.
Heading into their game on Tuesday with the TomSox, the Lumberjacks were one of the hottest teams in the Valley League (VBL).
The Lumberjacks were winners of seven of their last nine games and were 3-1 against the TomSox in four games this season.
On Tuesday, the TomSox handed the Lumberjacks their worst loss of the season as the team fell 16-0.
The TomSox set the tone of the game with a six-run first inning and kept it going after that.
After their six-run first inning, the TomSox came back out swinging in the second inning with a three-run inning. The team would add three more runs in fifth and four more in the sixth innings before the game was called after seven innings due to the new 2022 mercy rule.
The Lumberjacks struggled with getting any runners on base as the team left five on base as the team only collected three hits as they went 3-for-23 at the plate. Joshua Rodriguez (1-for-3), Gavin Baird (1-for-2), and Cooper George (1-for-3), each collected a hit for the team.
The Lumberjacks used five pitchers in the game and even went to the offense to use two arms as George and Victor Rodriguez each made their 2022 VBL pitching debut. George gave up four runs on four hits, and gave up one walk in 1.2 innings. Meanwhile, V. Rodriguez, allowed three runs on four hits, and one walk in one inning. Joseph Eischen (L, 0-1) started for the Lumberjacks and took the loss as he gave up six runs on three hits, while walking two in just two-thirds of an inning.
The TomSox finished with 13 hits in the win, that included four players with a multi-hit performance. Trey Younger (2-for-4) and Matthew Prevesk (2-for-5) led the way for the TomSox as they each had two hits and three RBI’s. Brady Kirtner (W, 2-1), picked up his second win of the season after pitching four scoreless innings where he gave up just one hit while walking two and striking out five. The TomSox pitching struck out 11 batters in the win.
The 16 runs given up were the most the Lumberjacks have given up this season.
For the TomSox it was the teams second most this season. In the TomSox previous game a win over the Waynesboro Generals, the team scored 17 runs in a 17-4 victory. In their last two games alone are the hottest team in the VBL as they have scored 33 runs. That is the most runs scored in the VBL this season for a two game period.
The Lumberjacks are back on the diamond tonight as the team hosts the Harrisonburg Turks at Casey Field at 7:00 p.m. On Friday, the Lumberjacks are on the road at 7:00 p.m. against the Generals. The Generals are 4-0 against the Lumberjacks this season.
