Alleghany and Covington High School was represented at the 2022 Outdoor Track Class 1/2 State Championship at James Madison University this past weekend.
The AHS Mounties were represented by Gabe Miller, Macyn Cash, and Gracie Barron. While the CHS Cougars were represented by Purcel Turner and Mitchell Tallman.
The state championship got underway Friday afternoon with Turner finishing tied for nine place in the high jump with a jump of 5-06.00. On Saturday, Tallman, did not place in the pole vault finals as he finished with an NH (no height). Auburns, Andy Vaughn, went on to win the pole vault state title clearing 12-00.00 while also breaking the school record.
Meanwhile, all of the Mounties events did not start until Saturday.
Barron opened the Saturday’s events for the Mounties with a 10th place finish in the girls 3200 meter run. Barron, ran a steady race and moved into the top-10 during the last lap and finished with a time of 13:14.79.
The boys Class 2 3200 meter run followed not long after, where Gabe Miller placed second overall with a time of 9:57.12. Miller led for a good chunk of the first half of the run before being surpassed by eventual winner George Austin III of East Rockingham. Michael Kawecki from Poquoson High School wasn’t too far behind Miller towards the end of the race, but Miller was able to break away during the last lap for a second place finish. Miller also competed in the boys Class 2 1600 meter run where he finished in sixth place with a time of 4:44.36.
Prior to the boys 1600 meter run, Cash, competed in the girls 1600 where she placed ninth overall with a time of 5:54.39. During the last lap, Cash, was in 11th place where towards the end, she passed Alyssa McFalls (Dan River) and Bethany Vogel (Poquoson) to move into and placing ninth. In the same race, Glenvar’s Carly Wilkes, was able to showcase to the rest of the Class 2 why she is one of the fastest runners in all of Virginia as she won the 1600 with a time of 4:49.39. Wilkes lapped the back end of the runners in the 1600.
The Mounties had four top-10 finishes.
Patrick Henry (G. Spring) wiped out the competition in the Class 1A by placing first in the boys group with 107.50 points, while the Auburn girls placed first with 96.50 points. Meanwhile, Radford finished first in the men’s Class 2A with 66 points, while the Glenvar finished first in the girls with 75 points. Alleghany finished 20th in points in the boys group with 11,
