The 2022 Valley Baseball League (VBL) kicked off for the Covington Lumberjack on Saturday.
In the teams season opener, the Lumberjacks defeated the Charlottesville Tom Sox 9-2 on the road.
Cole Ketzner (3-for-4) led the way for the Lumberjacks with a four-hit, four RBI performance in the teams season opening win.
Michael Guerrero (0-0) grabbed the start on the mound for the Lumberjacks and allowed one run on two hits, while walking three, and striking out three in three innings.
The Lumberjacks relief pitching was big in the teams win. The team used four relievers that combined to allow one run on three hits, while walking three and struck out 12.
Garrett Bonnett (1-0) picked up the win for the Lumberjacks. Bonnett struck out three batters and walked one in three innings pitched.
Leading 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning, the Lumberjacks scored six runs in the ninth to help open the game to a seven run lead.
The ninth inning was highlighted by a two run single from Ketzner.
The Lumberjacks were back on the diamond last night with the teams home opener at Casey Field against the visiting TomSox.
