Averi Phillips (W, 1-for-3), saved her best performance on the mound for the three seeded Alleghany Lady Mounties following the teams 3-2 victory over the sixth seeded Radford Bobcats in the first round of Region 2C softball tournament.

A. Phillips, tossed a complete game one hitter. In her seven innings on the mound for the Lady Mounties, Phillips gave up two runs (both earned) on the one hit, while walking five and striking out 10.

The Lady Mounties offense only had four hits in the teams victory. A. Phillips, helped her cause on the mound by collecting two RBI’s. Averi Fridley (1-for-3), provided the Lady Mounties with the teams other RBI.

Ally Brown (L, 1-for-3), did her best to counter A. Phillips. In six innings, Brown allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits, and one walk. Brown, also provided the Bobcats with two RBI performance at the plate, which came via the teams only hit, a two-run home run.

After a scoreless two and a half innings, the Lady Mounties struck first on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Following Daphne Shinault’s (1-for-1) lead-off single, Kelsey Nicley (0-for-2), got on base and reached second on a fielding error by right fielder, Maggie Paige (0-for-3). With two runners in scoring position, A. Phillips ripped a two-run single on the first pitch to put the Lady Mounties ahead 2-0.

With A. Phillips cruising on the mound, the Lady Mounties were just four outs away from a victory. After recording the first two outs of the top of the sixth inning, A. Phillips, walked Autumn Howard (0-for-2). With the tying run at the plate, Brown, with a 2-and-2 count, crushed the ball over the center field fence which tied the game at 2-2.

The Lady Mounties would respond in the home half off the sixth inning by regaining the lead. Erin Harden (0-for-2), walked to lead the inning off. Emalee Phillips (1-for-3), followed with a single. With an out in the inning and a runner in scoring position, Phillips, hit a hard ground ball to second base that allowed Harden to score from third and put the team back ahead 3-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, A. Phillips, retired the side in order to close the game out.

In three meetings with the Bobcats this season, this was the closest game. In two regular season meetings, the Lady Mounties had outscored the Bobcats 29-4.

The Lady Mounties now advance to the next round of the Region 2C tournament where they will play at James River against the Knights this evening. Both teams split their two regular season meetings. The Knights defeated the Lady Mounties at Alleghany 11-1, while the Lady Mounties went on the road and defeated the Knights 4-1.
