Bandits Threaten To Kill Their Prisoners Unless Troops are withdrawn Immediately
“For God’s sake take away the troops. They threaten to kill us all.” This message of despair came from J. B. Powell, American newspaper man, captive, with other foreigners, in the camp of the Shantung bandits, who wrecked and looted the Shanghai-Pekin Express Sunday and carried off its foreign passengers. The cry from the hills, to which the brigands, now closely pressed by government troops, have withdrawn, causes consternation. Grave fears are felt for the safety of the undetermined number of foreigners still held. The despairing message from Powell stirred anger among the foreigners against what they felt to be insufficient measures for protection or release of the prisoners, now believed to be in deadly peril.

Boiling Spring ‘Miss FHA’ Crowned
An estimated 75 members of the Boiling Spring High School Future Homemakers Club and their mothers and guests, attended the club’s annual mother-daughter banquet held last night at the school. The climax of the banquet featured the crowning of junior Linda King as “Miss FHA” by principal F.H. Hoover. Brenda Wolfe, a freshman, and Libby Rose, a sophomore, were chosen attendants to the queen and received corsages.

Chairman Of City Schools Dies At 51
Powell M. “Pookie” Leitch Jr., 51, chairman of the Covington School Board, died Sunday evening at Emmanuel Episcopal Church following a sudden illness. He was the husband of Ginger Ballenger Leitch. The couple resided at 111 North Lexington Ave, Covington. He had been an endman in the annual Covington minstrel show for the last 15 years and was very active in several community affairs.

Lord Botetourt Crashes Alleghany’s Senior Day, 10-6
Alleghany’s softball program celebrated senior day Thursday. Lord Botetourt spoiled the party. Alleghany third baseman Lacey Shifflett dives for a short pop up during Thursday’s Blue Ridge District game against Lord Botetourt at Mountaineer Field. The visiting Cavaliers spoiled senior day for the Lady Mounties as they topped their hosts, 10-6, in BRD play.
