The Alleghany Mountaineers (6-3) boys tennis team kicked off the second half of their season on Tuesday evening at Radford against the Bobcats in the teams first Three Rivers District match.
The Mounties found themselves behind early 3-0 after losing all three of their doubles matches. It was only the second time this season that the Mounties lost all of their doubles matches for the game.
The Bobcats would then open up the singles competition with three straight victories to seal the win for the team. The team would go on to win 8-1.
“We were competitive in two matches. I don’t think the other guys gave up, Radford is just a lot better”, said Mounties head coach, Seth Davis.
Despite the loss, the Mounties lone victory of the match came from senior Baron Leitch in singles competition. Leitch, defeated the Bobcats number one singles competitor, William Greene, 8-4. Following the singles victory for Leitch, he improved to 7-2 on the season. Davis, felt that this was Leitch’s best match of the season.
The loss for the Mounties was the teams second in a row. The Mounties ended the first half of its season losing to the Riverheads Gladiators for the second time this season.
This loss the Mounties suffered against the Bobcats has reminisces of their first loss to the Gladiators. The team shut down the Mounties 9-0 in game one their two meetings. In the second meeting, the Mounties nearly rallied from being down 4-0 and cut the lead down to 4-3. However, Davis, is not worried or thinking about about the next meeting with the Bobcats.
“(We’re) focused on Floyd (County). Radford is significantly better. I won’t be concerned about the Radford for a couple more week”, said Davis.
For right now, Davis, has his team set and focused on Thursdays match with the Buffaloes of Floyd County.
“We just have to be more consistent. We need to get at better at the lowers seeds keeping the ball in play. I think our attitude will be good Thursday, but we need to keep getting better because other teams will get better”, added Davis.
Tomorrow the Mounties return home and look to get back on track as they take on the Buffaloes at Clifton Middle School.
