Hunting Laws Are Changed By Commission
The State Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries convened here today
in the last of a two-day session given over a consideration of certain changes in
the game laws and to pass on other matters of interest to sportsmen throughout
the state.
At its opening session yesterday, the commission approved nine
regulations governing hunting in the state and the session today was expected
to be purely routine in nature.
One regulation approved yesterday provides that Virginia hunters will be required
to tag and report all deer and bear killing during the coming hunting seasons.
The regulation will extend throughout the state a plan which has been in operation
in recent years in counties west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Supporters Of New Main Street Jail Project Say It Is Cost Effective And
Will Enhance Area
There’s been talk of building a new jail in Alleghany County for at least 25 years.
The talk moved closer to becoming reality last month, however, when the Virginia
Board of Corrections gave Alleghany County and Covington the go-ahead to proceed
with planning for a regional jail.
The approval, which came in mid-March, means construction of the 53-bed, $6 million
facility being proposed for downtown Covington could begin by October. The jail is to
be built on land now occupied by the 111-year old Alleghany County Jail. The new jail
would be owned by Alleghany County and Covington and bed space would be provided
for inmates from Bath County and Clifton Forge.

Over 9,000 Acres Charred By Wildfires
Wildfires, still burning in Alleghany County, had damaged more than 9,000 acres by
Wednesday night. The U.S. Forest Service still has personnel on scene battling blazes
near Alleghany tunnels in the western portion of the county and in the Rich Hole
Wilderness area on North Mountain.
There was no estimated containment date for either fire this morning. Dry and windy
conditions in the Highlands have made containment efforts difficult for firefighters.
