Coming off of the teams first loss of the season against the Riverheads Gladiators, the Alleghany Mountaineers (6-1) boys tennis team bounced back in a big way last Friday with a doubleheader shutout sweep of the Martinsville Bulldogs.
Baron Leitch, saw the court the most in the doubleheader, as he picked up four wins for the Mounties. Leitch, won both of his solo matches and both of his doubles that he was in. In his two doubles victories, Leitch was paired with Maddox Crance in the first game and Coy Brown in the second. On the season, Leitch has only been part of one double loss which came in the Mounties 9-0 shutout loss to the Gladiators.
McKinley Goodbar and Nathan Clark, each provided three wins a piece for the Mounties in their Friday doubleheader victories over the Bulldogs. Goodbar, won a pair of solo matches, while Clark was a part of a pair of doubles victories.
The Mounties improved their doubles record to 18-3.
“It was beneficial to sub guys in for the second match. We have a return match with Riverheads on Wednesday, so we have to focus on continuing to get better”, said head coach, Seth Davis.
In their previous meeting with the Gladiators, the Gladiators had set the pace of the matchup by sweeping the three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 advantage, before going through the Mounties in solo competition on their way to a 9-0 shutout victory.
Mounties head coach, Seth Davis, said they were exposed by the Gladiators and that the team had things they needed to get better at. Following their victories over the Bulldogs, both via shutouts, it seems the Mounties are headed back on the right track and will be ready for their second meeting with the Gladiators on Thursday.
