Backed by Cristi Persinger’s game-high 17 points, the Covington Cougars (5-11) girls basketball team picked up their fifth win of the season with a 48-32 victory over the Craig County Rockets (2-11).
Persinger, had quite the basketball game as she put together a double-double with her points scored and recording 11 steals in the Cougars win. Persinger, also, was second on the team in rebounds with nine.
The Cougars had two players finish in double figures scoring, Persinger and Kayla Bartley, who scored 15 points. Lauren Bragg, dominated the glass for the team with a game and season-high 18 rebounds. Bartley, finished with seven rebounds as well. The Cougars in the win, outrebounded the the Rockets 43-26.
Early on in the first quarter, after giving up the first points of the game to the Rockets, the Cougars scored nine straight points to take a 9-2 lead. The Cougars would end the first quarter with a 14-8 lead.
Both teams kept the game close with a tight second quarter with each team scoring 14 points. The Cougars went into the second half with a slim 28-22 lead.
The third quarter would prove to be the difference maker. Up six points to start the second half, the Cougars opened the third quarter by going on an 8-0 scoring run to take a 36-22 lead. Christina Terrell, helped lead the third quarter charge as she knocked down one of her two three-pointers during their scoring run. The Cougars went into the fourth quarter with a 38-28 lead.
The 10-point lead proved to be too much for the Rockets to overcome as they were held to just four fourth quarter points.
It was a rough game for the Rockets shooting as the Cougars defense held them to a 31% field goal percentage.
Madison Underwood, was the Rockets leading scorer with a team-high 12 points to go along with four rebounds. Hannah Ratliff, was second in scoring for the Rockets with six points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Annabelle Gregory, led the team with eight steals.
The Cougars were back on the court last night as the team hosted the Bath County Chargers.
