The Covington Cougars Football and Volleyball teams spring seasons were cut short due to the COVID Pandemic.
The varsity football team finished its season with a record of 2-3, but played four actual games and one game they had to forfeit due to a thin roster.
The team led by head coach, Chris Jones, looks to build the team back up.
It was a rough season for the team in general last spring, especially for the senior class.
There was a lot of talented seniors who missed out on a full season including Shaun Smith, Jr., who graduated and has moved on to continue playing football at Emory and Henry College.
Smith, Jr., along with the other seniors were denied a full season to continue showing his dominance on the football field as a running back.
Losing Smith, Jr., will be a big void for the offense.
Smith, Jr., rushed for 4,662 yard in his four seasons along with 59 rushing touchdowns. That is a major void to fill on offense and it would of been even more had the team been able to play all of their games.
But that was last seasons team and this is about this years team and the search and recruit to help fill where those voids are in the teams roster from losing their seniors last season.
One other bright note from the Cougars team last season was once again winning the Brackman Cup game against the Alleghany Mountaineers.
The Cougars won the game 28-21 and marked the third straight year that they defeated the Mountaineers for the Brackman Cup.
The two schools will meet for the Brackman Cup on Friday, September 10th at Boodie Albert Stadium.
This Friday, the Cougars open up their fall season at home against another rival, the Bath County Chargers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Boodie Albert Stadium.
