CLIFTON FORGE – The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarships to two Covington residents, Trevor Hunnicutt and Clyde Selman, who are enrolled at DSLCC for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Part of more than $95,000 the non-profit Educational Foundation will award in scholarships and grants for the upcoming academic year, the awards will assist with tuition and book expenses for one year at DSLCC.
In 2001, the non-profit Virginia Firefighters Foundation, Inc. initiated the Virginia Firefighters Foundation Scholarship program to provide tuition assistance for dependents of Virginia firefighters or students who are firefighters themselves at community colleges within the commonwealth.
According to DSLCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Chairman Donna Vaughn, initial disbursements were made to colleges in the southwest region of the state, and DSLCC was one of the first award recipients.
“We are delighted to be able to offer this scholarship opportunity to students who either are dependents of Virginia Firefighters or are themselves firefighters,” said Vaughn. “It helps, in a very small way, to repay these brave men and women for their care of and sacrifice to the communities in which they live.”
Trevor Hunnicutt
Trevor Allen Hunnicutt is a June graduate of Covington High School and is a volunteer firefighter with the Covington Fire Department.
He is enrolled in DSLCC’s General Studies Transfer program and emergency medical services classes.
After completing requirements for an associate degree at DSLCC, Hunnicutt plans to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in fire science and safety technology.
Hunnicutt was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities at CHS including membership in the Cougar track team for two years and the football team and Students for Christ Club for one year.
Clyde Selman
A member of the Covington Fire Department for twelve years, Clyde Sanford Selman Jr. is enrolled in DSLCC’s Welding Program.
A non-traditional student, Selman said he is seeking training in welding to enhance his career opportunities and to make him more marketable in his field.
Selman also received the Regional Literacy Scholarship, which is funded by the Regional Literacy Coordinating Committee in Fishersville.
The committee established the scholarship to encourage adult learners who have either completed an adult high school program or possess a GED Certificate to seek higher educational opportunities.
Selman is employed with Total Plant Maintenance in Low Moor. He is a member and elder of Calvary Christian Church.
Married to Mary Kate Dressler Selman, he is the father of two sons, Shawn and Chris, both of Covington.
The DSLCC Educational Foundation’s goal is to “Build Hope…Build Futures…Build Lives.”
The foundation is dedicated to helping area residents achieve a post-secondary education and awards thousands of dollars in scholarships each year to high school graduates who reside in the DSLCC service area – Alleghany, Bath, northern Botetourt, and Rockbridge counties, the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington, and the town of Clifton Forge.
In addition to its scholarship programs for newly graduated high school students, continuing students, and non-traditional students, the foundation also supports the college through the purchase of state-of the art, technological classroom equipment and through faculty study grants for domestic and international educational travel.
