Four local student-athletes have been named local winners in the Wendy’s High School Heisman program.
Samantha Fridley and Christian Vess of Alleghany High School and Megan Lockhart and Colton Harris of Covington High School were selected among applicants at their respective schools.
Since 1994, the Wendy’s High School Heisman program has honored more than 250,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors in partnership with the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee.
The leadership award honorees are well-rounded young men and women who excel in learning, performing and leading in the class room, on the field and in the community.
Samantha Fridley
Samantha is a member of the varsity softball team at Alleghany, earning All-Blue Ridge District second team honors as a sophomore and first team recognition as a junior.
She is also a member of the Renegades summer softball team.
Samantha is involved in the BETA Club, Students for Christ and Key Club at AHS and has volunteer experience in leadership class and with the local Christmas Mother program.
Her academic achievements include Honors English 10, Honors Biology, Honors English 11, Honors Earth Science, AP U.S. History and DE Political Science.
Megan Lockhart
Megan has been a four-year member of the Cougar golf team, a three-year track performer as well as serving as a scorekeeper for four seasons with the boys basketball team.
She is involved in Students for Christ, the CHS band, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, after school chorus and the Beta Club.
Megan also is a member of the Covington Ruritan Club, the New Creations teen choir and the WOL youth group.
She represented CHS at Girls State and attended the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Conference.
Christian Vess
Christian is a member of the varsity football team at Alleghany and was a starter on the both sides of the ball, serving as captain during his senior season.
He received the Most Unselfish Player team award this past year.
At Alleghany, he is a member of Students for Christ and Beta Club as has been a Governor’s School student for the last two years.
Christian is a member of multiple clubs that require volunteer work, from the local Christmas Mother program to canned food drives.
During the summer he works at Camp ACCOVAC, a church camp in Highland County, were he helps take care of children.
Colton Harris
Colton is a three-sport athlete at CHS, participating in football, baseball and basketball.
His athletic honors include All-Pioneer District in both football and baseball as a junior. Colton was a football team captain in both his junior and senior years and currently is a captain on the basketball team.
Colton is a member of the Beta Club, SCA, Friends of Rachel Club and is the secretary of the CHS Class of 2013.
His community activities include ringing the Salvation Army bell, while honors include Academic Scholar, junior Honor Marshal, Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar and the U.S. Achievement Academy Who’s Who.
