The Virginian Review lost one of its own over the weekend. Buck Rumpf died Saturday, nearly a year after he retired from his duties at the newspaper.
We in the newsroom at the newspaper often kidded Buck about running Alleghany County east of Island Ford Bridge. We chided him about being an unofficial member of Clifton Forge Town Council and Iron Gate Town Council, the two governing bodies he covered for the newspaper. We weren’t far off with either of these assertions.
Buck also remained in close contact with The Shadow. His association with this shadowy figure was one of the Highlands’ worst-kept secrets.
Buck leaves behind a wife, two daughters and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He may be gone, but he won’t soon be forgotten.
