ASHWOOD — The 50th annual Bath County Art Show is underway at Valley Elementary School with 818 pieces of artwork submitted by 296 artists.

The Best In Show award was presented to Ramey Campbell of Somerset for his oil, Evening Skies, Bath County. He received $1,000.

Judge for the show was Al Gury, chair of the Painting Department, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pa.

Speaking of Campbell’s work, Gury said “Evening Skies, Bath County combines subtle atmospheric color, rich and diverse paint quality and a strong composition with a powerful sense of place, poetry and mood. The painting draws you into  it’s world from a great distance and seems to change with the light and the longer one looks at it.”

The annual show raises funds for art related projects in Bath County and is sponsored by the Bath County Arts Association.

This year, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the show, the founders, the late Elinor Hopkins and Christine Herter Kendall, receive special recognition in the show’s information booklet.

Both lived in Bath County and supported the arts.

Christine Herter Kendall moved to Bath County in 1923 with her husband William S. Kendall who died in 1938. Their home later became the Garth Newel Music Center.

She was an accomplished artist, violist and author and died in 1981.

Elinor Hopkins was a native of Bath County and studied art in Paris in the 1920s.

She returned to her native county and was active in the community. She co-founded the Bath County Art Show with Christina Kendall in 1964. She died in 1995.

The show is open through Sunday at Valley Elementary School. Hours are 1 to 5 p. m. each day and  10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Sunday. There is no admission charge.
