The season’s first winter storm didn’t arrive early enough to turn downtown Covington into a winter wonderland Saturday, but that didn’t stop a large crowd from lining up to see the annual Covington Christmas parade.

Sponsored by the Alleg-hany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the parade stepped off Saturday night and wound its way down Main Street and Maple Avenue.

The chamber thanked the following volunteers who organized the parade: David Arritt Sr., David Arritt Jr., Kyle Arritt, Jon Bush, Ray Keen Sr., Ray Keen Jr., Matt Sudekum, Mike Seldom-ridge, Chris Persinger and Dave Pack.

Following the parade, the chamber named winners in the following seven categories:

Doris Caldwell Mem-orial Award, Best Float Overall: Dabney S. Lan-caster Community College.

Religious: First Place, Persinger Memorial United Methodist Church; Second Place, Good News Christian Fellowship Church.

Novelty: First Place, Edgemont Nursery School; Second Place, S.J. Neat-hawk Lumber Company.

Marching Unit: First Place, Kountry Kickers; Second Place, Tri-County Cloggers.

Junior Marching Unit: Covington Highlighters.

Equestrian: First Place, Brandon Nickell.

Honorable Mention, Most Original Entry: Wayne Wilhelm, Grinch On Harley.
Entries in the Christmas parade included:

The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother Teresa Hammond on Hezekiah, the Covington Fire Department, Covington Highlighters, Persinger Memorial United Methodist Church, 2013 Petite Miss  of America Christen Holloway, Cheeze Claus, Tri-County Cloggers, Edgemont Nursery School, Shadtree Towing, Weigh Sharp-Isaac Blake.

Garlynda’s Fancy Feet, King of the Highlands Kolten Moody, Supreme King of the Highlands Shannon Wolfe, Cub Scout Pack 26, Clifton Middle School cheerleaders, Koun-try Kickers, Heath Mabry and Cotton the Dog, Eddie Tucker, Mark Haunter, Alleghany High School Band, Loving Life Fellow-ship Church.
