CHESTER — Columbia Gas of Virginia has received notice that a contractor may be using the company’s name as part of their door-to-door sales pitch. Columbia Gas has not authorized any company or organization to use its name or likeness in any advertising or sales promotion in Giles County or any location in Virginia.
To avoid being a victim, Columbia Gas offers these suggestions:
•Always ask to see photo identification before allowing any stranger into your home.
•Ask to see their Virginia business license number and or local permit.
•Verify with local authorities the legitimacy of the company or organization.
All Columbia Gas employees and authorized contractors carry identification cards bearing their name, photograph and identification number.
•If you are not sure about an individual’s identification, or to verify the Columbia Gas work being performed around your home, call our emergency response telephone number at 800-544-5606 and ask to speak with the field supervisor for your town. It is answered 24 hours a day.
•Columbia Gas employees drive clearly marked vehicles.
•Do not allow entry into your home to people who claim to offer a Columbia Gas refund or to see your personal Columbia Gas bill.
•All account transactions are handled through the mail or online.
•Immediately report suspicious activity to the Police. If a person, claiming to be a Columbia Gas employee does not have proper identification, do not allow them into your home or business and immediately call the 911 and Columbia Gas at 800-544-5606. Give them a detailed description of the individual and their vehicle.
