February 18, 1937

Today’s Headline: Lick Run Farmer Dies This Morning.

Mr. Wilbur H. Duff, 62 years old, a farmer living near Lick Run, died this morning at his home there at 6 o’clock following a heart attack.

The body was brought to Covington about noon today where funeral services will be held from the Loving Funeral Home here Saturday and burial will be made here.

The Covington Business and Professional Women’s Club will meet tonight in the home of Mrs. Harold Hodges in Midland Heights. Dinner at 7 o’clock.

Today’s Headline: Laundromat Found Looted By Thieves.

City police are investigating a petty larceny at the Quick Clean Self-Service Laundry on Main Street sometime Saturday.

An unknown intruder broke the glass on a vending machine and removed $1 or less in merchandise.

The offense was reported by Fred Sites of 907 Beverly Street at about 9:30 Sunday morning. Leonard McClain of 614 Highland Avenue was complaintant.

Police estimate the value of the broken glass at $5.

Today’s Headline: Hercules Plans Recall.

Hercules in Covington will be recalling an undetermined number of workers in the near future to meet an increase in production demand.

Covington plant officials have not released any details concerning the potential callback; however, “street talk” in Covington puts the number between 75 and 125.

The Hercules plant in Covington employs approximately 400 in the film operation.

Until a fire extensively damaged the fibers division of the plant in 1980, employment was over 1,000. Following the fire, the fibers division of the plant was closed an approximately 500 persons were laid off.

Today’s Headline: Covington Kroger To Close Today.

The Kroger Store in Covington will officially close its doors at 6 p.m. today after serving customers for over 70 years.

Closing of the supermarket on Craig Avenue was announced in September and the 45 employees were offered jobs at stores in the Roanoke Valley area.
