Robert Martin “Pookie” Montgomery, Sr., a lifelong resident of Covington, passed away December 30, 2015 at his residence following a long illness.

“Pookie” was born April 12, 1931.

One of fourteen children, he was proceeded in death by his parents, Thomas Blair Montgomery, Sr. and Bertie Mae Lowen Montgomery, as well as numerous brothers and sisters.
Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years Virginia Mae Black Montgomery; son R. M. “Marty” Montgomery, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Port Republic, Virginia; and the true loves of his life, granddaughters Jessica Montgomery Goldstein and husband Gabe of Herndon and Jacqueline Montgomery Jarrels and husband Travis of Harrisonburg.  Additionally, he is survived by two sisters, Mary Alice Dodd of Clifton Forge and Patricia Plymale of Petersburg, as well as brother-in-law Ronnie Black and wife Linda of Covington and numerous nieces and nephews including Nancy Gilbert of Clifton Forge and Christina Clark of Hardy.
A 1952 graduate of Covington High School, Robert served 15 years in the Virginia National Guard.  He was a member of Mallow Presbyterian Church.

Robert first worked for Gibson Hardware, then Hercules, Inc., and finally for Dabney S. Lancaster Community College before retiring in 1996.

Robert loved children and young people; he volunteered for many years as a little league football coach, as well as Scout Master for Boy Scouts.  He loved to hunt and fish but nothing gave him as much pleasure as helping to raise his granddaughters.
Alice Bocook assisted in Robert’s care over the past year and is specifically recognized and greatly appreciated by the family for her loving care and attention in his final week.
At his request, the body has been cremated.

Harrison Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

While there is no formal visitation, visitors are welcome at the Montgomery home.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions are welcomed and may be directed to Mountain Regional Hospice, P. O. Box 637, Clifton Forge, VA 24422.
