COVINGTON, Va. (VR) –  Alleghany’s golf team took on one of its toughest opponents of the season Tuesday, hosting Greenbrier East for a nine-hole varsity match at Cliff View.

The Cougars finished with a team score of 189, led by Jagger Rowland’s 44. Jaxon Deem followed with a 46, while Gavin Randazzo shot 48. Sophie Knighton added a 51 to complete Alleghany’s scoring four.

Zach Hicks and Sawyer Knighton both finished with rounds of 56.

Greenbrier East posted a 152, led by Isaac Hutchison’s 36 and Seth Napier’s 37.

The match gave Alleghany valuable experience on Cliff View’s back nine, an area the Cougars have not practiced on this season. Greenbrier East also faced the unfamiliar layout, making the round a strong test for both teams.

Alleghany will get back on the course Thursday at Botetourt Golf Course, where the Cougars will compete against James River and Glenvar. The varsity match will begin at 1 p.m. and cover 18 holes, followed by a nine-hole JV match.
