LYNCHBURG, Va. (VR) — Alleghany traveled to Brookville Friday night ready to play, but Mother Nature had other plans.
Two weather delays pushed the start of the non-conference matchup back before the Cougars finally took the field. Once the game got underway, Alleghany never backed down, despite facing a Brookville Bees team with a noticeable size advantage.
The Bees struck first and held the Cougars off the scoreboard through the first half, taking a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Alleghany put together its best stretch of the night.
Elijah “Buddy” Leisure-White broke through the Brookville defense early in the third quarter, finding a crease and racing 26 yards to the end zone for Alleghany’s first touchdown of the season. The extra point attempt failed, making it 14-6 with 9:43 remaining in the third.
Brookville answered later in the quarter with a touchdown pass before adding another touchdown in the fourth quarter to secure a 28-6 victory.
Despite the loss, the Cougars moved the ball well, finishing with 305 total yards. Alleghany rushed for 148 yards on 30 attempts and completed 12 of 28 passes for 157 yards.
The Cougars recorded 17 first downs and ran 60 offensive plays.
Head coach Will Fields said the Cougars played hard but need to clean up the details.
“I felt we played hard, but Brookville made plays that we didn’t,” Fields said. “We need to eliminate pre-snap penalties and small details.”
Alleghany was flagged 13 times for 90 yards.
The Cougars now turn their attention to Greenbrier East, which will visit Alleghany on Friday.
“East has some good skill players and some size on the line,” Fields said. “They’ve played some tough teams so far so we’re not really focused on their record. Both teams will be determined to get their first win, so I expect a tough game.”
