Holding Data Centers Accountable for Energy Costs:
Data center growth is driving Virginia’s electricity costs higher and forcing hardworking taxpayers to sacrifice more. I’m proud to cosponsor the bipartisan Ratepayer Protection Act, which would help ensure large data center operators, rather than everyday ratepayers, cover the cost of the grid upgrades their facilities require.
H.R. 9340 would require state utility regulators to consider adopting a standard requiring data centers and other customers drawing 100 megawatts or more to pay the full cost of grid upgrades built to serve them, while also providing financial assurances up front. This bill establishes fairness and transparency and, ultimately, puts money back into your pocket.
I’m proud to continue advocating for legislation that protects Virginia families, holds large corporations accountable, and ensures hardworking Americans aren’t left footing the bill for the rapid expansion of data centers. Virginia ratepayers deserve a fair energy system where those who drive increased costs are responsible for paying their fair share.
Standing Up for Veterans’ Earned Benefits:
Our Veterans have made tremendous sacrifices to protect the freedoms we cherish, and now it’s our turn to repay the favor. That’s why I am proud to be a cosponsor of the Time of Service Act, which adjusts the time limitation on the use of a Veteran’s educational assistance entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. This bill supports Veterans by adjusting the 15-year clock for those who were discharged or released from active duty on or after January 1, 2001. This bill continues to signify respect, honor, and admiration for those who have served our Nation.
Specifically, this bill modifies eligibility rules within an existing VA program (the Post-9/11 Educational Assistance Program) administered by an existing agency. By ensuring Veterans have the time and flexibility to use the benefits they earned through their service, we can better uphold our commitment to those who have sacrificed to protect our Nation.
I will always stand with our Veterans and work to ensure they receive the respect, gratitude, and support they have earned.
Advancing Education with Secretary McMahon:
Last week, I was honored to visit the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center in Winchester in support of the Returning Education to the States Tour, joined by U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. I’m especially grateful for constructive visits like this that impact the education of our youth in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Secretary McMahon and I enjoyed greeting students as they arrived for the new school year before touring the center for a firsthand look at the Professional Skills Academy and Health Science Academy. I realize that education is one of the greatest forms of investment in our Nation, and because of that I have continued to advocate for increased funding in the House.
These innovative programs create opportunities, possibilities, and avenues for growth for our future generations. We must continue strengthening these pathways, so every student has the opportunity to gain the tools they need to build a successful future. When we continue to strengthen education in the Commonwealth of Virginia, we open doors for the next generation and ensure every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Thank you, Secretary McMahon, for coming to Virginia’s 6th District to visit one of our fantastic career and technical education centers, the Emil & Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center, and for promoting policies that help our students and build our workforce.
Supporting Virginia’s Farmers:
It was especially meaningful to participate in the Virginia Farm Bureau’s Frost and Freeze Roundtable last week in support of the farmers who help feed and sustain communities across the Commonwealth. The American Farm Bureau Federation, being the voice of Agriculture, works together with producers to ensure farmers can continue to feed our Nation and the world. Our cattle producers are a vital part of Virginia’s agriculture industry and the backbone of our rural communities. We know the Administration has been working to combat high prices, and we must also focus on strengthening our domestic cattle industry to ensure that American producers have the support they need to meet demand. I will continue working in the House to support our cattle producers while working to lower costs for American families and farmers.
I had the privilege of meeting with growers and Virginia agriculture leaders to learn more about the devastating effects of the freeze experienced across the Commonwealth in April and discuss ways in which I can continue to support producers up in Washington. Conversations like these allow me to better support Virginia’s agriculture community and I appreciate Virginia Farm Bureau, the Glaizes, and the Alson H. Smith AREC for hosting this event.
Visits with Miss Virginia:
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting with Miss Virginia, Maddie Marchant, and Miss Virginia’s Teen, Caedyn Riddle. It was wonderful to hear from Maddie about her community service initiative, invisABILITY, and her efforts to raise awareness and understanding of celiac disease.
Celiac disease affects an estimated 2 million Americans. I am proud to support those living with celiac disease by advancing legislation to improve allergen and gluten labeling on medications and provide greater transparency for consumers. As a co-lead of the Allergen Disclosure in Non-Food Articles Act, I am working to expand the support and protections available to those affected by celiac disease.
It was also an honor to learn more about the Miss Virginia Opportunity and the many ways the organization serves communities across the Commonwealth. Each delegate dedicates countless hours to service and advocacy, demonstrating a true commitment to making a difference in their communities and across Virginia.
I am grateful for the opportunity to meet with these inspiring leaders and learn more about their service, advocacy, and dedication to making a meaningful impact throughout the Commonwealth.
