LOW MOOR, VA (VR) — The Alleghany Highlands School Board has approved the appointment
of Dee Ann Tickner as principal of Jeter-Watson Elementary School, effective July 1.
The board approved Tickner’s appointment at its June business meeting held Monday,
June 15. She will succeed Cynthia Morgan, who will become director of instruction for
AHPS on July 1.

Tickner brings a strong background in education and experience serving students,
families, and staff to her new role.

She has served as assistant principal at Jeter-Watson since August 2022, working
under Morgan. She previously served as an early childhood special education teacher
at Sharon Elementary School beginning in 2013.

Before joining Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, she was a school counselor at
Breckinridge and Eagle Rock elementary schools in Botetourt County, as well as a
counselor in Spartanburg One Schools in Inman, S.C. She began her career in public
education in 1995.

Tickner holds a Master of Education degree in elementary guidance and counseling
from Clemson University, where she graduated in 1995. She earned a Bachelor of
Science degree in special education from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. She
received her undergraduate degree in 1993.

Tickner has worked as a school counselor and special education teacher, and she really
enjoyed getting to know students and their families

“I am honored, humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next principal of
Jeter-Watson Elementary School,” Tickner said. “Having served as the assistant
principal, I am deeply committed to the community and thankful for the trust that has
been placed in me. I am excited to begin this new chapter and look forward to a
wonderful school year,” Tickner said.

School Board Chair Jon Lanford said Tickner’s experience within the division and
background in teaching, counseling, and administration will support a smooth transition
into the principal role.

“Mrs. Tickner brings strong leadership experience and a deep commitment to student
success. Her background within our division and years in education make her well
prepared for this role, and we are confident she will serve Jeter-Watson Elementary
well. She has worked closely with Mrs. Morgan, and that experience will help ensure a
smooth transition,” Lanford said.

The 2026-27 school year begins Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Tickner will lead the school into the new academic year.
