COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – A five-run first inning put Covington in an early hole as the Lumberjacks fell to Woodstock 10-2 Thursday at Casey Field.
Woodstock scored five runs on four hits in the opening frame and never looked back. The River Bandits added a run in the fourth, three more in the seventh, and another in the ninth. Covington scored its first run in the second inning and added another in the ninth. The Lumberjacks finished with six hits while committing four errors.
Bryant Zayas, George Pardo Jr., and Zach Doorlag each scored a run for Covington. Doorlag and Emory Stephens drove in the Lumberjacks’ only runs. Stephens collected a double while Jake Ambrosio, Deundre Jones, Chris Carroll, and Doorlag added singles. Carroll reached base twice and stole his third base of the season. Jones drew two walks and swiped two bases.
Luke Richards took the loss after allowing five earned runs in one-third of an inning. Andy Hernandez settled things down with 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one run while striking out two. Devin Grazzal, Enzo Gurgel, and Robert Boing also saw time on the mound. Woodstock outhit Covington 12-6.
The Jacks bounced back Friday night with an 8-2 road victory over Waynesboro. Covington jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the second for a 3-0 lead. The Lumberjacks broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth. Covington finished with nine hits and played error-free baseball.
Chris Carroll scored three runs, collected a hit, drove in a run, and reached base three times via walks. Mason Reid scored twice, while Bryant Zayas recorded two hits and a walk. Emory Stephens drove in two runs, while Carroll, Zach Doorlag, Deundre Jones, and Cross Yarborough each added an RBI. Covington also stole five bases, with Carroll, Luis Acosta, Doorlag, Yarborough, and Reid all recording steals.
Lucas Rodriguez earned the win after tossing 4.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven. Nikolas Koorse added 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Eli Porter worked two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Quindon Wright closed out the game. The Lumberjack pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts.
Harrisonburg handed Covington a 15-2 loss in the final game of the stretch. The Turks struck quickly, scoring six runs in the first inning and adding another in the third before pushing three runs across in the fourth. Harrisonburg added five runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Covington scored both of its runs in the fifth inning and finished with four hits.
Darrius Brown provided the offensive highlight, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and both Lumberjack RBIs. George Pardo Jr. doubled and added a hit, while Michael Greenberg also collected a base hit. Thomas Fratto scored one run and drew two walks.
Hunter DePriest suffered the loss after allowing nine runs, eight earned, over 3.1 innings while striking out five. Deundre Jones, Nelson Martinez, Enzo Gurgel, and Aniel Berbes worked in relief. The Turks finished with 16 hits while Covington committed three errors.
