The Mavericks of James Monroe took home the heavy hardware   Saturday night in the Mountaineer Invitational boys basketball tournament.
This weekend, it the girls’ turn.
Alcova Mortgage is teaming up with the Alleghany girls basketball program in putting on the Lady Mountaineer Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s four games will be split between Alleghany High School (varsity) and Clifton Middle School (JV) with all the action moving to AHS on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
“We think it will be two great days of girls basketball,” said Alleghany head coach Jeff Wolfe. “This tournament is something we have wanted to do for a while.”
Friday’s opening night varsity schedule at AHS will pit Bath County (1-3) against James River (0-2) in the 5:30 p.m. opener. The Mountaineers (4-1) will square off with Craig County (0-3) in the second semifinal.
At CMS, the JV semifinals will be flip-flopped with Alleghany playing the Rockets at 5:30 p.m., and Bath County taking on James River at approximately 7:15 p.m.
All four games plus a 3-point contest and skills competition will be held at AHS on Saturday.
The JV consolation game tips things off at 11 a.m., followed by the varsity consolation game.
The junior varsity title game is set for 3:30 p.m., with the varsity championship decided at 5 p.m.
In between the consolation and championship games, a pair of fun contests will be held.
The Mark Keith skills competition — sponsored by Mark Brackenridge and J&K Electric — is first on the agenda, followed by the Danny Keene 3-point shootout — sponsored by Lee Roe and The Rail Bar & Grille.
“Covington has held the 3-point shootout at their tournament and it was always a lot of fun for the girls,” said Wolfe. “And we decided to add a skills contest in honor of Coach Keith, he was always big on fundamentals and skills.”
A 3-point champion and skills winner will be crowned on both the varsity and junior varsity levels.
In addition, a scholar athlete will be honored from each school in honor of Margaret Sizemore, who taught in the Alleghany County Public School System for 25 years prior to her death this past July.
The scholar athlete presentation is sponsored by Mary Ann Beirne and the Virginian Review.
Admission for each day of the tournament will be $6 and concessions will be available at both Alleghany and Clifton Middle School.
“We hope everyone comes out and supports girls basketball and our tournament this weekend,” Wolfe finished. “We have four programs with a lot of local ties. It should be a lot of fun.”
