COVINGTON, Va. (VR) - Kids in colorful Easter attire filled Main Street on Saturday as Covington Parks and Recreation hosted its annual parade and egg hunt.
Wagons and bikes rolled through the route before the crowd gathered at City Park, where eggs were spread across the grounds for the hunt. Children quickly filled baskets as the event shifted into high gear.
The Easter Bunny posed for photos and handed out gifts, drawing steady lines throughout the afternoon.

Weather Closures Prompt AHPS Calendar Updates

LOW MOOR — Alleghany Highlands Public Schools announces several updates to the 2025-2026 academic calendar following action by the school board.

As previously announced, Monday, February 16, will now be a full student day instead of the previously scheduled parent-teacher conference day. This change allows students to make up instructional time lost due to recent weather-related closures. Parents or guardians who wish to meet with a teacher to discuss their child’s academic progress should contact the school their child attends. Conferences may be scheduled in person, by phone, or online.

Additionally, Friday, March 20, which had been scheduled as an early dismissal day to allow for parent-teacher conferences, is now confirmed as a full student day. Families interested in scheduling conferences should contact their child’s school.

Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson, leaders of AHPS, said the division appreciates the community’s flexibility and support as it works to keep students on track.

“Our goal is to provide every student with the learning time they need,” Halterman and Snead-Johnson said. “For the remainder of the school year, many inclement weather days may be virtual. This approach helps families and staff stay safe while keeping learning moving forward.”

AHPS continues to prepare virtual learning options in the event of additional closures:

  • Elementary students will receive paper packets with five days of work to complete at home.

  • Middle and high school students will receive assignments through Canvas, email, or paper packets, depending on what works best for each class and student.

With Chromebooks already in use, Canvas will be the primary platform for middle and high school students during virtual learning days. Families will be notified when students should check Canvas or email for assignments. All students are expected to complete assigned work to remain academically on track.  In the event of anticipated poor weather, additional students may be provided take-home Chromebooks.

The school board has also designated March 5 and March 6 as potential makeup days if additional instructional time is missed due to weather. These dates are currently part of spring break. If makeup days are required, Day 8 missed within the second semester would be made up on March 5, and Day 9 on March 6 (currently we have taken 5 inclement weather closures during the second semester, absent any remote/digital learning). Families will be notified if these days are needed.

For updates on scheduling changes, families are encouraged to follow AHPS on Facebook and Instagram or visit www.ahps.k12.va.us.
