STAUNTON (11 a.m.) – Snowplows are steadily improving roadways in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands, especially interstates and primary routes. Most counties in the region received six to 10 inches of snow and sleet, so plenty of work remains to be done. Most neighborhood streets and other secondary roads are still covered.

Sunshine and near-freezing temperatures on Monday afternoon may help the Virginia Department of Transportation as it plows and treats roads around the clock. Residents can help by continuing to avoid non-essential travel. Vehicles pack down snow and sleet, making it more challenging for snowplows to reach bare pavement.

Excessively cold temperatures are expected the rest of the week.

This will cause refreezing and icy patches, even on previously plowed and treated roadways.

Here are the conditions as of 11 a.m. Monday in the VDOT

Staunton District:

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge County.

Interstate 64 – Moderate conditions in Alleghany County. Minor conditions in Augusta County. Clear conditions in Rockbridge County.

Interstate 66 – Minor conditions in Warren County.

Primary Roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Rockbridge and Highland counties.

Secondary Roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.

For road-condition updates and travel information visit the 511

Virginia website, download the mobile app or dial 511. Motorists should check their entire route as conditions will vary throughout the Commonwealth.
