LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) — Due to the predicted severe winter weather this weekend, the instructional team at Alleghany Highlands Public Schools has created a plan that emphasizes safety and educational priorities. Currently, no final decisions have been made regarding snow days, but updates will be shared via usual communication channels.
If predictions hold true, snow days may be designated for Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27, if needed. Following this, virtual instruction may be provided to all students on Wednesday, January 28 and Thursday, January 29, with a possibility for continued virtual classes on Friday, January 30, if continued school closure is necessary. We encourage our community to remain attentive to AHPS communications.
AHPS plans to provide virtual instruction, if needed, in an effort to encourage instructional progress. In general, AHPS considers virtual instruction when significant disruptions to the academic calendar are possible.
“We understand that virtual instruction can provide a unique challenge, and we thank everyone for their cooperation,” shared AHPS leaders Kim Halterman and Melinda Snead-Johnson. “We are working hard to prepare our students for important tests and try to avoid additional changes to our academic calendar as much as we can.”
To support students, nutritious food packets will be distributed on Friday, January 23, covering breakfast and lunch for two days for our families. AHPS encourages families to check their children’s backpacks for food on Friday. Our food services team is also exploring options for food pickup sites on later days if this becomes necessary and appropriate.
“As we prepare for the upcoming weather, our priority is the health and safety of our students and community,” continued Halterman and Snead-Johnson. “We appreciate everyone’s support as we navigate these changes together.”
