Barbara Mottern Paitsel

Barbara Mottern Paitsel, 74, born in Covington, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on January 19, 2026, in Mount Airy, North Carolina, embraced by her three loving sons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Malcolm “Mac” Mottern and Helen Stone Mottern. She is survived by her husband, Nick Rea of Mount Airy; her three sons, Dr. Brian Paitsel and Justin Paitsel, both of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Chad Paitsel (Courtney) of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and her two beloved grandsons, Henry and Jack. She is also survived by her sisters, Jeanie Nida and Mildred Wilson, and her brother, Harold “Bucky” Mottern (Doris), all of Covington, Virginia.

Before retirement, Barbara worked as an X-ray technician, a career that reflected her caring nature and dedication to helping others. She found her greatest joy in her family. She loved painting, traveling, golfing, singing, and spending time with those she loved most. An animal lover at heart, she had a special compassion for all creatures.

She will be remembered for her radiant smile, joyful laughter, and the warmth and love she shared with everyone. She grew up in the Presbyterian faith and later attended Epworth Memorial Wesleyan Church in Cana, Virginia.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Covington, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ALS United North Carolina, 4 N. Blount Street, Suite 200, Raleigh, NC 27601, or online at alsnc.org
