Public Notice

Alleghany Highlands Community Services provides transportation to individuals with developmental disabilities in Alleghany County, City of Covington, and Town of Clifton Forge for the purpose of transporting individuals to and from medically necessary services, day support, and community engagement opportunities. Funds are being requested from the Commonwealth of Virginia to purchase a 14-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift ($130,000) through the FTA Section 5310 Program to continue this transportation service. The vehicle will be used to transport ambulatory and non-ambulatory individuals from their homes in Alleghany County, City of Covington and Town of Clifton Forge to medically necessary services, community integration opportunities and to the Life Skills Day Support Program that operates from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and other times as needed. 

AHCS invites any interested public or private transit or paratransit operator in the Alleghany County, City of Covington and Town of Clifton Forge to comment on the proposed services by sending a written notice by January 30, 2026 to the Virginia Department Rail and Public Transportation – Public Transportation Division, 600 E. Main Street, Suite 2102, Richmond, Virginia 23219, and to Alleghany Highlands Community Services, 205 E. Hawthorne Street, Covington, Va. 24426.
