COVINGTON , Va. (VR) – As we welcome 2026, we reflect on a year marked by meaningful progress, strong community spirit, and shared accomplishments here in Covington. The year 2025 brought growth and forward momentum made possible by the dedication of our city employees, the support of our residents, the vitality of our local businesses, the generosity of our donors, and the enthusiasm of our visitors.

Throughout the year, the City of Covington celebrated milestones and improvements that continue to enhance the quality of life for all. From the early stages of the Hawthorne Street Bridge, downtown sidewalk, and Mid-City Mall projects, to paving improvements in neighborhoods throughout the city, we strengthened the infrastructure and public spaces that bring our community together, along with the completion and initiation of many other projects across the city this year.

At the Jackson River Sports Complex, residents and visitors enjoyed the opening of a new mini golf course, updated restroom facilities, and a walking trail, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for recreation and family enjoyment. We were also proud to host the highly successful First Annual Covington Christmas Market, which led into the annual lighting of the light trail at the Jackson River Sports Complex, filling our community with festive cheer and holiday spirit.

We honored Covington’s rich heritage by proclaiming November 9, 2025, as the 155th anniversary of the Historic First Baptist Church, recognizing its lasting impact on our city. Economic growth and revitalization were further reflected in the opening of new businesses, bringing renewed energy and vibrancy to our downtown core.

To the dedicated employees of the City of Covington, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your tireless efforts, professionalism, and commitment to public service make every achievement possible.

To our residents and visitors, thank you for your trust, continued support, and active participation in the life of our city. Your engagement and community spirit remain the heart of Covington, and we are grateful for each and every one of you.

We extend sincere appreciation to our long-standing business owners for their continued investment and for helping shape Covington’s unique character. To the new businesses that opened in 2025, we warmly welcome you and look forward to the positive contributions you will bring to our community. To all of our business owners, we wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

We also offer a special thank you to our donors, whose generosity supports countless programs, improvements, and community events. Your contributions are invaluable and help make Covington a stronger, more vibrant city for everyone.

Our heartfelt appreciation extends to our neighboring local governments, regional partners, and agencies that work alongside the City of Covington. Through collaboration, shared resources, and a shared commitment to progress, we continue strengthening the Alleghany Highlands and surrounding areas. We value these partnerships deeply and look forward to continued cooperation in the year ahead as we work together to improve infrastructure, economic opportunity, public services, and quality of life across our region.

Finally, we thank our local media partners. The Alleghany Journal, The Recorder, The Virginian Review, and The Two Virginias Newsroom, for your professionalism, positive working relationships, and dedication to covering Covington events throughout the year. Your commitment to sharing our community’s stories is truly invaluable.

As we step into 2026, we do so with hope for the future and compassion for one another. We recognize that the New Year can be a tender time, especially for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. This year, we honor and remember Mayor William E. “Lance” Carson Jr., whose leadership, dedication, and deep love for the City of Covington left a lasting legacy that continues to guide us forward. We also hold close the memories of all community members, colleagues, friends, and family members who are no longer with us.

May the New Year bring comfort to those who grieve, strength to those who carry on, and peace to all who reflect on lives well lived. Together, may we honor the past, support one another in the present, and move forward with unity, kindness, and renewed purpose as we continue serving the City of Covington and the greater Alleghany Highlands.

May the New Year bring you good health, happiness, and abundant joy.

With heartfelt appreciation,
The Covington City Council
Mayor Fred F. Forbes III
