STUARTS DRAFT, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany girls stepped into a tough Shenandoah District matchup on Thursday night, showing persverance early before Stuarts Draft pulled away in the second half for a 56–20 final.
Alleghany opened the night ready to match the Cougars’ intensity, handling the full-court pressure long enough to stay within striking distance. After falling behind 19–6 in the second quarter, Alleghany strung together a late surge, scoring the final five points of the half to trim the deficit back under 10.
That stretch — marked by tighter defense, stronger rebounding, and more composed possessions — was the bright spot of the night for Alleghany.
Coming out of the break, though, Stuarts Draft found its rhythm and hit Alleghany with a 15–0 run to open the third. Despite the swing in momentum, Alleghany continued to hustle on the defensive end and battled on the boards, but Draft’s hot shooting and depth made the difference as the home team steadily extended its lead.
Alleghany’s young roster continued to show flashes of growth, staying active in the passing lanes and forcing turnovers of their own. The Mountaineers also found small sparks on the offensive end, with balanced scoring spread across the lineup, but struggled to string together consistent possessions against the pressure.
The Cougars are back on the road on Tuesday (Weather Permitting) when they compete against Jefferson Forest.
