SALEM — The Southwest Virginia-Wide After Prom Grand Finale was held Sunday, June 2, at the Salem Civic Center, with Brianna Hodge from William Byrd High School winning a brand new 2019 Nissan Kicks SV donated by First Team Nissan.
She earned it by staying drug and alcohol-free on prom night.
Logan Miller from Bath County High School and Bienvenue Amani from William Fleming High School each won an Apple MacBook Air as second place prizes. During the drawing, all three qualifiers drew keys that unlocked a special lock box and became finalists.
All qualifiers who attended the event received a $20 gift card. K92’s Zack Jackson and Freddy Mac emceed the event.
The Youth of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety (YOVASO) Advisory Board sponsors the After Prom Grand Finale as an extra incentive for students to attend and stay until the end of their school’s after-prom party.
The event was under the ownership of RAYSAC, the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition until this year.
This prom season, more than 65 percent of teens (over 5,251) from 40 participating schools stayed until the end of their party. Six students from each school who stayed until the end of their party were chosen to attend as qualifiers.
Of the qualifiers who attended the APGF event, 74 percent attended and stayed until the end of their after-prom party to try to win the car.
“In the past 31 years of the After Prom Grand Finale event, none of the participating schools have experienced the tragedy of a drug or alcohol-related driving accident on the night of their prom,” said Sheila Lythgoe, YOVASO Advisory Board chair. “This event saves lives.”
Information about the YOVASO Advisory Board’s After Prom Grand Finale can be found on their website at www.AfterProm GrandFinale.org.
For additional information, contact After Prom Grand Finale Coordinator Becky Parr at AfterProm GrandFinale@outlook.com or (540) 798-0788.
