CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – A beloved symbol of Christmas spirit and community pride since the 1960s is making its return this holiday season. The iconic “Noel” Family Christmas Star, which has watched over Clifton Forge for generations, is being rebuilt and restored — thanks to the passion and dedication of local resident Brian Hambrick, project lead, with the heartfelt blessing of the Noel family and the support of the Town of Clifton Forge and Clifton Forge Main Street.

Perched on the hillside across the railroad tracks from the Clifton Forge Elks Lodge, the star has long been a cherished landmark — illuminating the night sky each holiday season and signaling that Christmas is near. For decades, families and visitors alike have looked forward to seeing it shine as part of the town’s Christmas parade and seasonal festivities.

Like many things, time has taken its toll. The star has weathered many seasons, and it’s ready for a little love and renewal. So, with the permission and blessings of the Noel family, Hambrick made the decision to bring it back to life.

“It’s that one thing that says Christmas is on its way — and every time I see it shining, it takes me back to some of the best years of my life,” said Hambrick. The Noel family shares that sentiment wholeheartedly. “This project is about more than rebuilding a star; it’s about rekindling the spirit and memories that bring our community together.”

The new design features a 24-foot aluminum frame fitted with energy-efficient warm white LED lights, preserving its classic glow while ensuring durability for future seasons. The star will also be repositioned closer to its original location for better visibility.

In addition to the physical restoration, a monument will be placed along the Clifton Forge Sensory Trail, honoring donors and looking toward the direction of the star. A webpage and digital guestbook are also being created to document the star’s history and allow family and visitors to share memories online for generations to come, accessible via QR code on the monument.

All donations for the project are tax-deductible and handled through Clifton Forge Main Street. Contributions may be dropped off at:

• Clifton Forge Town Hall – 547 Main Street
• Livy’s Closet – 507 E. Ridgeway Street, attention Jenny Oeltjen, President of Clifton Forge Main Street

Please include “Star” in the memo line of any check or donation.

Donors contributing $200 or more will have their name, memorial, or business engraved on a permanent plaque displayed at the monument site.

For more information or to offer support, please call or text 540-969-8239.

The rejuvenated Noel Family Christmas Star is expected to shine once again in time for the 2025 Christmas season, symbolizing the enduring light, love, and community spirit of Clifton Forge.

Stay tuned! A “Save the Date” for the Star Lighting Ceremony will be announced soon!
