CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – The Clifton Forge Police Department was dispatched to a residence on Church Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. A male subject at the residence was attempting to break into his neighbor’s apartment while armed with knife.

Upon the officer’s arrival, the male subject, identified as 42-year-old Michael Caldwell, went inside of his residence. He began speaking to officers through a screen door. Mr. Caldwell eventually retreated into the residence and closed the storm door. Mr. Caldwell stated that he was armed with a sword and knife. Officers maintained contact with Mr. Caldwell through the door for several minutes. Mr. Caldwell stopped all communication with law enforcement.

The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team was requested to respond to the scene. A warrant for violation of Virgina Code 18.2-90 (Entering dwelling house, etc., with intent to commit murder, rape, robbery or arson) was obtained. Communication with Mr. Caldwell was attempted again but ultimately failed. CS gas was fired into the residence by a member of the Emergency Response Team. Mr. Caldwell exited the residence with a machete in hand. He was struck twice with less-lethal munitions and taken into custody without incident. Mr. Caldwell was transported to Lewis Gale Alleghany for evaluation. Other charges are pending.
