LOW MOOR — The Alleghany County School Board has approved two administrative appointments at Alleghany High School.
Monday night, the board   appointed Jared Brown to serve as an assistant principal and activities director at AHS. Lucas Conner was appointed to serve as an intern assistant principal. Both appointments are effective July 1.
Brown has been employed by Botetourt County Schools since 2015.
He holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from James Madison University. Brown also double majored in education and pre-professional biology from Concord University while playing football and working part-time.
He has served as a coach in football, baseball and track and field.  In his most recent position, Brown  taught math in Botetourt County.
He has been a member of a leadership team, a crisis prevention team, a new teacher mentor and an attendance appeal committee member. He has also served as a member of CORE team (monitoring at-risk students). In addition, Brown spent two years teaching alternative education.
“I am excited for this opportunity to join a school and community with such a rich tradition. I’m looking forward to working with staff members, administration and parents to open as many doors as possible for our students,” Brown said of his new job at AHS.
Dwayne Ross, principal of Alleghany High School, said, “I am ecstatic to have Mr. Brown join the Alleghany High School family.  I have been more and more impressed each time I have had the chance to communicate with him, and I know he is going to do a great job.”
Superintendent Gene Kotulka said Brown will be an asset to the school division.
“I am extremely excited that Mr. Brown will be joining our school division,” said Kotulka. “His experience as a mathematics teacher and as a coach will be an asset as he transitions from the classroom to his new role as an assistant principal and activities director at Alleghany High School.”
Conner has been a science teacher at AHS since 2015.
He attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Christian ministries.  Conner holds a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction degree from Regent University. He is pursuing  a doctor of education in curriculum and instruction degree through the University of South Carolina.
Conner began teaching science at Alleghany High School in 2015 and has also served as the school’s science department team leader.
He is a certified Microsoft Innovative Educator and has Level 1 certification in the Flipped Learning Global Initiative.
In addition, Conner has served on many committees at AHS. He also served as head coach for junior varsity boys soccer during 2016-2017.
“I am really excited about this opportunity to serve the amazing students, faculty, and staff of Alleghany High School, along with the great parents and supportive community in Alleghany County,” Conner said.
“Alleghany High School is an excellent school with a vision for preparing students for success in the 21st century. I have loved being a teacher at Alleghany High School, and I look forward to stepping into my new role as part of the leadership team here,” he added.
“I am very pleased to have Mr. Conner join the administrative team at Alleghany High School,” Ross said. “He has been a very valuable member of our teaching staff, and I can’t wait to see him perform in his new role as an intern assistant principal.
“Mr. Conner is an excellent teacher whose use of technology has enhanced his classroom for his students,” said Kotulka. “Furthermore, his knowledge of instruction will be a great benefit as he begins his administrative career.”
