BATH COUNTY, Va. — The Bath County Chargers entered the 2025 high school football season with elevated expectations, fueled by memories of last year’s deep playoff run and a roster brimming with returning talent. As the leaves begin to turn and the season approaches its midpoint, the Chargers have already experienced the full spectrum of triumph and adversity, setting the stage for what promises to be a dramatic campaign.
The season opener on August 29 saw Bath County travel to Quicksburg to face the Stonewall Jackson Generals, a team eager to rebound from a challenging previous year. The Chargers, coming off an impressive 11-1 season, wasted no time asserting their dominance. From the opening whistle, Bath County’s ground game, led by star running back Ethan Bryant, overwhelmed the Generals’ defense. The offensive line was on a mission and successfully controlled the trenches, creating ample running lanes and setting the tone for the entire game. Quarterback Hunter Kirby, making his first real start under center, displayed poise beyond his years. Kirby completed several key passes and contributed significantly to the rushing attack, helping the Chargers cruise to a 36-0 victory. The defense, equally relentless, stifled Stonewall Jackson at every turn, preserving the shutout and sending a clear message to their district rivals that Bath County was back and hungry for more.
However, the euphoria of the opening win was short-lived. In Week 2, the Chargers traveled to Swoope, Virginia, to face the Buffalo Gap Bison—a team known for its physical style and fresh off its own playoff run. The atmosphere was electric, with skydivers parachuting onto the field before the opening kickoff, but the game quickly turned into a nightmare for Bath County. Buffalo Gap dominated from the outset, pushing the Chargers off the line and scoring at will. Despite flashes of resilience, particularly from the defense in the second half, Bath County suffered a humbling 50-0 defeat.
“It was a tough night for us,” said coach Phillips.
“But our guys kept fighting, even when things weren’t going our way. Losses like this can make you stronger as a team.”
Determined to rebound, the Chargers hit the road again in Week three, this time traveling deep into the mountains of Randolph County, West Virginia, for their first ever matchup against the Tygarts Valley Bulldogs. The journey was long and arduous, but Bath County arrived focused and ready to prove themselves. The game was a back-and-forth affair early on, with both teams trading momentum. Penalties, “some questionable,” threatened to derail the Chargers, but the team’s firepower ultimately proved too much for the Bulldogs. Ethan Bryant once again led the charge, breaking through the defense for big gains, while Kirby continued to impress both through the air and on the ground. The offensive line reasserted its dominance, and the defense made crucial stops in the second half. When the final whistle blew, Bath County had secured a convincing 53-22 victory, putting the sting of the previous week’s loss firmly in the rearview mirror.
The Chargers’ resurgence continued in Week 4, as they finally had the privilege of hosting the Hancock Panthers from Maryland, another team they had never played before.
The anticipation was intense, and the Chargers did not disappoint their home crowd. From the opening drive, Bath County controlled the game, executing a balanced attack that kept Hancock on its heels. The defense was relentless, recording multiple sacks and tackles for loss, while the offense moved the ball with ease. Wide receiver Walker Randozzo emerged as a key target for Kirby, hauling in several impressive catches. Bryant and Kirby continued to rack up yardage, and the offensive and defensive lines should have earned the game ball for their dominant performance. The Chargers rolled to a 42-0 shutout, their second of the season, and improved their record to 3-1.
With the homecoming game set for October 10, Bath County finds itself in a strong position to contend for the district title and another playoff run. The team’s resilience in the face of adversity, combined with standout performances from its stars and a deep, talented roster, everyone dreaming of another incredible season. As the Chargers prepare for their next challenge, one thing is clear: Bath County’s football team is capable of winning a lot of games, and the best may still be yet to come.
