ROANOKE, Va. (VR) – The Hollins volleyball team welcomed the 22ndranked Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan to the main gym for an early Saturday morning Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match. The Marlins came into the contest off a 3-0 win across town at Roanoke College while Hollins battled Randolph-Macon to a 3-1 score last night. The Marlins got the better of play over the opening sets and took a 2-0 lead. As was the case last night, the Green and Gold showed a tremendous amount of fight and determination in pulling away in the third frame to make it 2-1. However, the high-powered Virginia Wesleyan squad finished out the match with a 25-12 win to remain unbeaten on the season.

Highlights

  • Hollins fell to VWU 12-25, 14-25, 25-21, 12-25.
  • With the score tied at 10-10 in the third stanza, Sophia Maurer took the service line and sparked a 7-0 HU run thanks in part to four aces. A pair of Maurer kills and a VWU miscue allowed Hollins to take the set.
  • 60 kills, 57 assisted, led the Marlins to the 3-1 ODAC win. Hollins converted 27 attacks into points.
  • Alyssa Reed led Hollins with eight kills. Brenna Rea recorded five kills with Maurer and Cassidy Hendersonfinishing with four. Rachel Hull had 12 assists while Maurer added four more aces to her season total of 49.
  • Defensively, Konner Myers led the back row with 13 digs. At the net, Norah Madrey had two solo and two assisted blocks and Aliyah Lightsey added a pair of assisted blocks

Up Next: Hollins goes on the road to Averett on Tuesday for a 6:30pm start against the Cougars.
