COVINGTON, Va (VR) – Community leaders, local officials, and residents gathered Wednesday morning to celebrate the grand opening of Dr. Gary Pillow’s new Main Street office, marking a significant milestone in the career of a beloved local audiologist and speech-language pathologist whose service has spanned nearly five decades.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at Pillow’s newly renovated location, drew a crowd of well-wishers, including Covington Mayor Fred Forbes, Clifton Forge Mayor Jeff Irvine, representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Corporation, and numerous friends, family members, and potential patients. The event was a testament to Dr. Pillow’s enduring impact on the Alleghany Highlands community and the vital role his practice plays in serving individuals with hearing and speech needs.
Executive Director of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Josh Taylor, who served as master of ceremonies, opened the event by welcoming attendees and expressing excitement for the new chapter in Dr. Pillow’s career.
“What a great turnout. Welcome to the ribbon-cutting celebration for Dr. Pillow’s new Main Street location,” Taylor said. “We’re so excited to be here today to celebrate with you. The office is incredible.
Congratulations.”
Taylor then introduced Kathleen All, a member of the Chamber of Commerce board of directors, who praised Pillow’s commitment to the community.
“Congratulations on your new location and just a big thank you for your continued service to our area, to so many with hearing disabilities and the needs that they have,” All said. “Thank you so much for your expertise and just how you care so much for our community.”
Mayor Fred Forbes took the podium next, reflecting on the importance of Pillow’s work and the visibility of his new location.
“Your services are greatly needed. I know firsthand, right here on Main Street, where people can see you,” Forbes said. “If there’s anything at all, let us know.”
Mayor Jeff Irvine of Clifton Forge echoed those sentiments, congratulating Dr. Pillow on behalf of the town.
“Congratulations on your new location. Wonderful building, it’s beautiful. Anything the town of Clifton Forge can do, just let us know,” Irvine said, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines the community.
Tyler Sizemore, representing the Economic Development Corporation, emphasized the broader impact of Dr. Pillow’s practice.
“Congratulations on your new office. It’s beautiful there. We need people like you in our area. The access to the audio, language, and speech services that you provide are great for our area. Thank you for what you do,” Sizemore said.
Pillow reflected on his long career and deep roots in the area.
“It takes a village to raise a child. I came here in 1975 and started working in the Alleghany County school system. Soon after that, I was in Covington schools, and soon after that, my practice in 1981,” he said. “I’m hoping to start the next 50 years right here. I love serving people and helping people talk and helping people hear.”
Pillow also acknowledged the support of his family, especially his son Nicholas and his grandchildren, who helped restore the new office. He paid tribute to Helen, who sold him the building years ago, and to the many friends and colleagues who have supported him throughout his career.
The celebration featured refreshments provided by Kanawha Cafe, and guests were invited to tour the newly renovated office. Local artist Cheyenne Marcus was recognized for painting a mural on the building, adding a vibrant touch to the Main Street landscape.
As the ceremony concluded, attendees gathered for a group photo in front of the building, capturing a moment of community pride and shared accomplishment.
“We want everyone to get in behind for the photo,” Taylor instructed, as laughter and camaraderie filled the air.
For Pillow, the day was both a celebration of the past and a look toward the future.
“I just appreciate y’all. Fred and I go way, way back. Here’s to the next 50 years,” he said, his gratitude evident.
The ribbon cutting marked not just the opening of a new office, but the continuation of a legacy of care, compassion, and community service that has
defined Dr. Pillow’s career. As Covington looks ahead, residents can be assured that Dr. Pillow’s commitment to helping people communicate and connect remains as strong as ever.
