COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany Cougars junior varsity football team rallied late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Waynesboro Little Giants, 8-6, in a rain-soaked defensive battle Thursday night at Casey Field. The Cougars trailed nearly the entire game but scored the tying touchdown and the game winning two point conversion with just over a minute remaining. Quarterback A.J Wheeler found receiver Dylan Maurer for the deciding points, pushing Alleghany to a dramatic win over Waynesboro’s JV squad. Penalties, fumbles, and defensive stands dominated most of the contest.
The Little Giants struck first, capitalizing on blown coverage in the first quarter for a passing touchdown. After a failed two point conversion, Waynesboro held a 6-0 lead that would survive nearly three quarters. Alleghany’s defense kept the Cougars within striking distance. Linebacker Garrett Havens halted Waynesboro’s opening two point attempt with a stop up the middle, while the defensive front routinely pressured the Little Giants’ quarterback and stuffed runs at the line. Several drives in the first half were undone by penalties and missed opportunities. The Cougars recovered just one Waynesboro fumble in the opening minutes, only to return possession after an offensive error of their own. Both teams traded punts and incomplete passes into the second quarter. Wheeler’s arm kept the Cougars moving sporadically.
He connected with receiver Maurer on several deep throws, while running backs Jayden Richmond and Bronson Shinault found occasional space behind the offensive line. But flags for holding or offsides repeatedly negated big plays, forcing Alleghany to punt and giving Waynesboro the advantage at halftime. The Cougars’ struggles continued into the third quarter. Richmond picked up small gains, and Shinault broke off a 16-yard run, but an ensuing holding penalty pushed Alleghany backward. Waynesboro’s defense hung tough, stringing out runs to the sideline and limiting Wheeler’s passing options. Waynesboro, meanwhile, found little room on offense. The Cougars’ defense swarmed to the ball, turning back several Little Giants drives with gang tackles and backfield pressure. Jaxson Harman, defensive end, delivered a key pressure late in the game, hitting the passing Waynesboro quarterback assuring a bad pass and sealing the defense’s dominant effort.
The momentum finally shifted with just over a couple of minutes to play, after Waynesboro was called offsides on fourth down, giving Alleghany fresh life inside the red zone. Wheeler, working from the shotgun, took control, calling his own number and picking up a key first-down. Wheeler then handed off to Shinault, who pushed the pile to the one-yard line. On the very next play, Richmond powered across the goal line behind strong blocking, tying the score at 6 with just over a minute to go. With a win in sight, head coach Mark Jefferson signaled for the two-point conversion. Wheeler delivered under pressure, hitting Dylan Maurer in the end zone for an 8-6 Alleghany lead. Waynesboro had one final possession but failed to reach midfield.
The Cougars’ defense held tight, and a sack by Harman ended the Little Giants’ last hope with seconds remaining. The victory was a testament to Alleghany’s resilience and tenacity. Wheeler finished with multiple completions and led a pivotal scoring drive. Richmond and Shinault anchored by their offensive line, accounted for almost all of the Cougars’ production on the ground, while Maurer’s decisive catch delivered the lead. Defensively, Havens and Harman stood out for clutch stops in the trenches. Both teams struggled with execution at times, but each played with passion and sportsmanship. Alleghany hopes to build on this momentum as their schedule continues. The Cougars’ comeback and defensive resolve left an enduring impression, as they outlasted the Little Giants in a contest dictated by determination, teamwork, and late-game poise.
