COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Staunton High School rolls into Covington this Friday night unbeaten, and the Cougars will have their hands full at Casey Field.
The Storm improved to 3-0 last week after taking down Rockbridge. Senior quarterback Taiden Combs led the way, throwing for 157 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Leon Woodward punched in a 30-yard score, while Jamil Ford added 30 yards receiving to keep the offense balanced.
Alleghany is coming off a non-conference contest against Greenbrier East. Buddy Leisure White gave Cougar fans a spark with a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown, while Des Jordan found the end zone three times and tacked on 19 rushing yards. Carter Nicely and Jay Godfrey has had an outstanding start to the season. Austin Greene is a huge threat, after having five catches for 79 yards against East.
Friday’s matchup will be a test for Alleghany, facing a Staunton team that claimed the district title last season and is once again showing why they’re a contender.
“Staunton always has a lot of speed, and it’s a well-coached program,” Alleghany head coach JR Fields said.
Kickoff between the Cougars and Storm is set for Friday evening at Casey Field.
